Uruguay, located just north of Argentina in South America, is a really exciting region to explore. No place moreso than the coastal area of Canelones, which produces some of the most luxuriously smooth and indulgent red wines made from the French variety Tannat. The cool coastal breezes help to slowly ripen the fruit towards notes of dark chocolate and rich red berries, while use of oak leads to smokier styles. Canelones is also an interesting region for savoury, full bodied styles of Sauvignon Blanc, fashioned in a similar style to those of Sancerre in the Loire Valley.
