The family estate was founded in 1994 by the Kovacs family, taking over Szent Donat’s rich wine-making history, which can be traced back over 200 years in Csopak. The family aim to showcase the unique soils and terroir of the Csopak-Balaton region across all of their wines. In 2006 the cellar expanded, and foundations were laid above it for the estate’s now-famous restaurant. In 2011, St. Donat was one of the joint-creators of the Codex of Csopak, a registered system that monitors high quality viticulture in the region. Winemaker Tamas Kovacs is also one of the Codex’s founders. The first soil selections for the Marga and Magma, the winery’s flagship wines, were chosen in 2014.
