Meet Gyorgy Zsiga, Ops Director

Gyorgy Zsiga Ops Director Wine BuyerGyorgy Zsiga is the co-founder of Novel Wines, which he set-up alongside business partner Ben Franks in 2016. A long-time purveyor of quality Hungarian wines, Gyorgy had been importing some of the country's best wine-makers for a decade before expanding his wine selection through Novel Wines. Gyorgy has a wealth of experience in hospitality and works closely with our trade customers from hotels to fine-dining indie restaurants across the UK. Read a bit more about him here.

Hails from: Székesfehérvár, Hungary.

Favourite wine? There are so many fantastic winemakers to choose from and we're discovering something new every day. However, for its structure, minerality and overall quality one of my all-time favourites is the Szent Donat 'Magma' Kekfrankos from Lake Balaton.

Favourite food? Duck liver pate with some fresh bread - and a glass of wine, such as the racy and fresh Sabar Keknyelu Komagas

Best cheese and wine combo? It's got to be sweet Tokaji - the Tokajicum Aszu 6 Puttonyos is something very special - and Stilton. A marriage made in heaven!

Outside of work I like to… Cook, travel or spend time with my kids. I visit Hungary whenever I can; it's a place I can truly relax in.

What’s the next big thing? So much could happen but for Novel Wines we would love to open a wine bar. The best way to share our unique wines is by tasting them, enjoying them with food and socialising over a good bottle. Somewhere like Bristol would be perfect for such a project.

Aldwick Estate

Somerset, England

This absolutely stunning vineyard is set in the Mendip hills in Somerset, just outside of Bristol and Bath. Aldwick Estate has been family-run for five generations and is today Somerset's largest vineyard at 11 acres of vines. The estate is headed up by managing director Sandy Luck. Sandy says the mission for Aldwick is "to balance respect for tradition with the drive for innovation".

Vines are hand-tended throughout the year by a small team based on site. Grapes are hand picked every September and October and pressed by wine maker Steve Brooksbank to create a range of red, white, rosé and sparkling wines.
