This month, we’re venturing off the beaten path to explore two hidden gems of the European wine world: Slovenia and Slovakia. These countries may not always be the first to come to mind when thinking of great wine regions, but they are home to some truly remarkable wines that deserve their moment in the spotlight.
Slovenia, with its ancient winemaking traditions dating back thousands of years, offers a diverse range of wines, from crisp whites to rich reds and of course some of Europe’s most exciting sparkling wines, all shaped by the unique terroirs of its rolling hills and lush valleys. Slovakia, meanwhile, is emerging as a dynamic wine producer, combining centuries of tradition with modern techniques to craft wines that are both distinctive and exciting.
In this month’s Explorer case, we’ve selected a variety of wines that showcase the innovation, elegance, and character of these regions. From indigenous grape varieties to modern interpretations of classic styles, there’s something here to delight every wine lover.

Hailing from Slovenia’s renowned Bizeljsko wine region, Istenic is a pioneering producer with a long-standing reputation for crafting world-class sparkling wines. Established in 1968, the winery was among the first in Slovenia to specialize in méthode traditionnelle sparkling wines, and today, Miha and his two sons are celebrated for their commitment to quality and innovation.
The No. 1 Brut is a stunning example of their craftsmanship, made using the traditional method, this sparkling wine dazzles with its fine bubbles and bright golden hue. On the nose, you’ll find aromas of crisp green apple, citrus zest, and a touch of freshly baked brioche. From the volcanic vineyards of Slovakia’s Južnoslovenská wine region, the Csernus Pesecka Leánka is a delightful expression of a lesser-known but highly intriguing grape variety. Pesecka Leánka is known to some as the Romanian grape Feteasca Regala (Royal Maiden) but in fact it is a crossing of Feteasca Regala and Moravian Muscat, giving it a more perfumed style.
