a'Beckett's is a family-owned vineyard in a beautiful Wiltshire setting in south-west England. They produce a range of quality still and sparkling wines with 65% of their vineyard planted with Pinot Noir. The 11-acre vineyard was established in 2001 by Paul and Lynn Langham and is today Wiltshire's largest vineyard with nearly 10,000 vines.

a'Beckett's first vintage was 2003 from its own vines. Well-drained, the soil provides a great plot for making fruity and fresh styles of wine, as well as being ideal conditions for sparkling wine production. The plot sits around 55-60m above sea level and is sheltered from prevailing westerly winds, a common problem in English vineyards.

Alongside the 11 acres of vines, a'Beckett's also has 6 acres of apple trees and recently planted 10 varieties of perry trees as well. This contributes to the apple juice and cider production done on site at a'Beckett's. This side venture is also a great way for the Langhams to involve locals with community pressing. They also press cider and apple juice for other orchard farms.

a'Beckett's are eco-minded and all of their wines have been certified as free of animal products by the Vegan Society.

The Langhams have also worked with United Glass to introduce bottles that are 10% lighter to improve the carbon footprint of the distribution of their wines and ciders.

In the trade, Paul has been a prominent figure in the promotion of English wine. a'Beckett's, as a member of the UK Vineyard Association (UKVA) and Wessex Vineyard Association (WVA), Paul served as regional and national chair of the UKVA from 2012 - 2015.

a'Beckett's Lynchet's Grapes

Pinot Auxerrois

Pinot Auxerrois, a French grape variety sometimes known as Auxerrois Blanc, is popularly grown across Alsace in France, Germany, Luxembourg, and - increasingly - in English vineyards like a'Beckett's. It is a sibling of Chardonnay, so when used in sparkling wines it's not too far from a Blanc de Blancs in style. Pinot Auxerrois favours limestone soils and ripens earlier than Pinot Blanc.

Food & Wine Matching

Great match with oysters.

Other serving suggestions include:

  • Mild fish curries.
  • Goat's cheese dishes.
  • White fish, especially pollock.
  • Light, white onion risottos.

Wiltshire, England

Wiltshire, located in the south west of England, is fairly landlocked and influenced by Westerly winds. There is plenty of south-facing vineyard space and, if you ever get the chance to explore Wiltshire's countryside, you'll discover that Wiltshire is one of the most beautiful landscapes in southern England. It's also full of quintessentially English towns and villages, including the pretty town of Devizes near to a'Beckett's vineyard.

While more famous for producing beers and ciders, Wiltshire is now home to at least 14 vineyards, of which a'Beckett's is the largest.
