The Wino's Guide to Pairing Wine with Potatoes

How to Pair Potato Recipes with Wine

Everyone loves the potato. This foodstuff might seem mediocre on first glance but when you begin to list all it's marvellous incarnations (chips, baked spud, roasties, mash, and so on) it's easy to see why potatoes are universally scoffed.

There's an amusing story of Chris Voigt, an executive director of the Washington State Potato Commission, who vowed to eat nothing but 20 potatoes a day for 2 months. It was found that potatoes are "a decent and inexpensive source of vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, magnesium and, with the skin left on, dietary fiber". However, they are lacking a little in Vitamin A, which helps your vision.

While Voigt may have taken a love for the humble potato to the extreme, we're just plain enthusiasts!

In this article Ben Franks shares his favourite 3 potato recipes and the perfect wine to match each one.

3 Potato and wine pairings EVERYONE should be tasting

1. Frittmann Gold Sparkling with a proper chippy's Fish & Chips

Few things go better than a great bubbly and your local chip shop's salt and vinegar battered cod and chips. The acidity of the wine just cuts through the salt and adds a bit of class to your quick dinner by the seaside.

2. Kayra Okuzgozu with sausages and mashed potato

When you get your mash extra creamy with a good dollop of butter and cream, seasoned with salt and pepper, and pair it with grilled pork sausages you just have to have a bottle of spicy Turkish red wine to go with it. The Kayra Okuzgozu is certainly our pick for this legendary spud dish.
