Artesana are Uruguay's "Tannat specialists". For the last few years, Uruguayan wineries have adopted the Tannat French grape variety as their national grape and today produce some of the world's finest Tannat wines. Artesana are at the top of that game focusing on small-production, ultra premium wines that have gained critical acclaim in the UK and USA. All their Tannats are made with the highest quality, estate-grown fruit and aim to showcase Uruguay's distinctive terroir.

The 80-acre estate in Las Brujas is 30 miles north of Uruguay's seaside capital Montevideo in the warm, coastal region of Canelones. The vineyard is entirely hand-farmed and has been since the first vines were planted in 2007.

In the winery, the grapes are handled by award-winning winemakers Analia Lazaneo and Valentina Gatti. Lazaneo and Gatti aim to have minimum intervention in the winery, allowing the fruit to express the terroir where it was grown. The grapes are fermented separately by block in stainless steel tanks before being blended. Barrel ageing is often used in both French and American oak for 12-24 months before being bottled without fining or filtration and bottle-aged an additional time of up to a year.

Artesana Tannat's Grapes

Tannat is originally from the Madiran area of France and makes highly tannic, powerful red wines. This has led to it predominantly being blended in French wines. However, in Uruguay where the climate is much warmer, the Tannat variety can make impressive, Malbec-like wines that are ready to drink after just 3-4 years. Tannat, now Uruguay's flagship grape variety, produces rich, full bodied wines with black fruits, spice and velvety tannins. Recently, Tannat was discovered to have 3-4 times more antioxidants than other red wines making it one of the healthiest options to choose.

  • 88pts, Michael Schachner of The Wine Enthusiast
"Jammy blackberry and boysenberry aromas are fruity and full. This modern-style Tannat shows a saturated, tannic palate that's jammy in the center. Flavors of dark fruit, toasty oak and mint finish with hints of graphite, rubber and leftover oak-related char. Drink through 2018."

Canelones, Uruguay

Canelones is the top winegrowing region in Uruguay and home to most of the country's vineyards. It's located in the central southern coastal area of the country, facing north Argentina. Here Ocean breezes keep climates moderate and ensure vines are well ventilated. The soils are free draining and there are over 200 days of intense sunshine annually, allowing Tannat - the region's flagship grape - to ripen fully but slowly, leading to the most characterful of wines.

Harvest in Canelones and much of Uruguay takes place between February and April each year. The country is made up of many small-scale, family-run wineries with some making wine as far back as the 18th century when vines were brought to Uruguay by the Spanish. Today there are over 220 wineries producing 10 million cases of wine a year.

Uruguay is ranked third in the world on the Environmental Sustainability Index and is proud to be one of the globe's most green and environmentally stable countries.
