Ancre Hill Estate

Ancre Hill Estate is a premium quality Welsh vineyard established by Richard Morris in April 2006. Richard manages with vineyard with his wife Joy and four sons, including David Morris the current vineyard manager. The first plantings comprised mainly of Chardonnay, Albariño and Seyval Blanc, with a small planting of Triomphe and Pinot Noir. A second site, extending the space under vines by 4 acres, was planted in 2007 with Pinot Noir. Situated by the town of Monmouth in the Wye Valley, both the sites are south-facing with limestone soils.

Since 2011, Ancre Hill Estate has adopted biodynamic practices and is approved by DEMETER every year to ensure the strictest organic principles are adhered by. No insecticides or herbicides are used in the vineyard.

After their first vintage in 2008, Ancre Hill Estate has been recognised for numerous international awards including Decanter and International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC) medals. In 2012 work began on an on-site winery, which was completed in 2015, and has been constructed entirely out of natural materials, with the walls constructed from straw bales and a living, green roof, providing temperature and humidity regulation.

Ancre Hill Estate Chardonnay's Grapes

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is a green-skinned grape variety originating from Bugundy in France that is today the most-planted white wine grape in the world (apart from the Spanish grape Airen, which is planted in La Mancha in Spain in huge quantities). Chardonnay is famed for its versatility, making wines as steely and crisp as Chablis to the honeyed, tropical styles of South Australia and South Africa. It is easy to grow and has a wonderful affinity with oak, making it a top choice to mature or barrel-ferment. Chardonnay is also one of the most important ingredients in sparkling wine, especially Champagne, where it remains one of the noble varieties.

Food & Wine Matching

Delicious match with Roast Chicken, especially when you get the skin nice and crispy.

Other serving suggestions include:

  • Freshly pan-fried scallops.
  • Most sheep's or goat's milk cheese.
  • Other seafood such as prawns or pub grub scampi.
  • Baked peppers stuffed with lemon & thyme quinoa.

Monmouthshire, Wales

Wales isn't usually the first place you think of when it comes to wine but they are actually making fantastic wines. Introduced to vines by the Romans over 2,000 years ago, the 2008 vintage of Anre Hill Estates' Blanc de Blancs was voted the best sparkling wine in the world by the Bollicine del Mondo International Competition in Italy.

There are currently 17 vineyards in Wales producing over 100,000 bottles of wine per year. The industry has won over 20 major awards and employs 350 people.

While wine is made on a small scale across Wales, the county of Monmouthshire, just over the Severn Bridge, is the place to look out for in Welsh wine. Situated in the heart of the Wye Valley, just south of the Brecon Beacons, the area is also a gorgeous place to explore.
