Domaine Koquelicot

Domaine Koquelicot create Burgundy-inspired Chardonnay wines in the Istrian peninsula, Croatia. Only the highest quality fruit is used in their wines.

In 2014 Jacqueline Marovac and Olivier Ertzbischoff started their exciting new venture in Croatia, Domaine Koquelicot. They began with a small production of white wines, focusing on Chardonnay and Malvazija, which they vinified in the Burgundy style. Olivier, formally a cardiologist, has worked in harvests and cellars at famous Burgundy domaines such as Anne Claude Lelaive and Bachelet. Jacqueline, a former Epidemiologist born in Rijeka, has a globetrotter lifestyle that takes her all over the world but of all the places it was Gracisce in Istria that would be the home of their new wine venture.

The pair buy in the finest quality grapes they can, mostly in partnership with their two local producers: Ivica Bencic in Motovun, who produces great Chardonnay on chalk; and Marijo Banko in Kosinozic, who supplies Chardonnay and Malvazija grown on red earth soils. The wines are made at Ranko Anđelini in Pazin and the French oak barrels are imported exclusively from Burgundian Francois Freres in 228L format (barriques).

Domaine Koquelicot was the pair's way of conveying the French winemaking style and to reflect the beautiful fields of coquelicots that surround the vineyards outside their home. The poppy, which they call an elegant flower that embodies their spirit, is found on the label of their wines.
