Ever wondered what sort of wine your favourite TV characters might drink? It’s certainly true that the wine we drink can often reflect our personality. What would inquisitive Sherlock Holmes drink whilst mulling over a case and would the mighty Jon Snow go for red or white (we vote red)?
At the end of a long, hard day, when you sit down to watch a DVD boxset or Netflix show, pour yourself a comforting glass of wine. If you fancy trying some fun, quirky, unusual and delicious wines inspired by some of your fave stars, don’t worry, we’ve got it covered. Check out some of the wine pairings below, grab some popcorn and get comfy on your sofa whilst you binge an entire TV series and sample some new and exciting wines.
If you’ve watched the series you’ll know that Harvey is a huge whisky fan. He pretty much drinks it on a daily basis, especially after important moments. Whilst we don’t really see him drinking wine solo, he appears to be a bit of a social wine drinker (like many of us). He can be spotted in the series drinking a glass over dinner with Mike and Lewis, and at home with Donna and girlfriend Scottie - and in most instances its red.
So we’re going to pick a powerful, dry full bodied high end red for Harvey, because we know he likes the finer things in life. And that’s why we’ve picked Babylonstoren Nebukadnesar 2013 Limited Release. This wine boasts brooding (much like Harvey) layers of dark chocolate and balance between spiced summer berries, blackcurrant jam and firm tannin.
Whilst we know that characters like the often merry Tyrion and Cersei Lannister are firm wine fans, Khaleesi is not a regular wine drinker, which is why we’re intrigued as to what she would pick. She occasionally indulges though, usually drinking out of an impressive wine chalice. At one point, a man tries to poison her using wine, saying ‘I have a sweet red from Dorne, my lady, it sings of plums and cherries and rich dark oak.’ Though thankfully she turns it down.
For the ever impressive Khaleesi Queen of Dragons we’d choose a Croatian wine - Matusko 'Rare' Supreme Dingac Reserve 2009. We feel that she would be served only the best and rarest of wines. Locally it’s known as "Blood of the Soil" for its deep colour - we think it would be befitting for a powerful queen.
Big Bang Theory fans will be well aware that Penny love a drink, particularly wine. She can often be seen with a wine glass in hand, and has had plenty of drunken mishaps. In one episode, concerned about her drinking habits, Leonard says ‘I'm not sure it's such a great idea to take Penny to where wine comes from.’
We don’t need to wonder which wines Penny might drink because you can spot many on the show, including a Bota Box Chardonnay. We’d definitely say Penny is a Chardonnay kinda gal, but she can also be spotted sipping on Pinot Grigio. If we had to pick though, we choose this budget friendly Portuguese wine for Penny.
Remember that episode where Sheldon picks a cocktail, and settles on Rosewater Rickey or when Penny serves him a long island iced tea which he assumes is just tea. These memorable moments do make us wonder what wine he’d pick.
It seems Tommy Shelby doesn’t eat or drink anything other than whisky during all three seasons. The Shelby company sell gin (take a peek at our gin selection here), so naturally he has to taste his product every now and then. Whilst it’s difficult to imagine him drinking wine, if we had to guess, Tommy would probably opt for vino grown on British soil. Like this Sixteen Ridges Early Pinot Noir 2015 for example. ‘Grown by cider farmers, Sixteen Ridges Pinot Noir is a very rare example of genuinely exciting English red wine.’
Poor Joyce has a rather traumatic time dealing with the disappearance of her son, Will. She spends a lot of time on her own, mulling things over. For her, we’d pick a soft, fruity rosé to add some colour into her life. Like this South African Babylonstoren Mouvedre Rosé 2016 for example. It’s a light coloured rosé, yet it still packs lashings of tastiness thanks to its ‘cool raspberry nose and flavours of strawberry yoghurt, thyme, crisp lemon and summer fruits.’
When you’re being hunted by zombies and it feels as though the world’s about to end, if you got the chance to enjoy a glass of wine (without being killed), then it better be a good one. We think Rick would appreciate an earthy red textured wine with plenty of flavour. This Turkish red wine is made from hand picked grapes, and has ginger flower aromas and leather, plum and cherry notes. Just what he’d need after a long hard day battling against terrifying zombies, we’d say he’s definitely earned a glass of quality vino.
