Novel Wines Showcases Asian Wine for Jeremy Irons Bath Spa University Dinner

This evening Novel Wines founder Ben Franks paired three Asian wines with a special dinner at Bath Spa University's Locksbrook factory. The evening was attended by new Bath Spa University Chancellor and Hollywood veteran Jeremy Irons.

We chose Chateau Ksara Sunset Rosé to go with a selection of starters. This summer berry pink is a beautiful-looking wine to get the dinner started. It's also a versatile match to the three dishes on offer: steamed dumplings, mango salad with pepper squid, and a pork belly bao. There's a gentle spice in Sunset's finish that just begs for good, fresh food like this.

Our all-new Kayra Kalecik Karasi red wine from Anatolia in Turkey took up place as the main event wine. It's similar to a Pinot Noir, although perhaps earthier, and has this lovely ginger root spicy freshness to it. The challenge was to choose a wine that would match as well with the lamb shoulder option as it would the honey-glazed salmon. We think the Kalecik Karasi does this spot on. It's elegant, not overpowering, and very delicious.

Finally we had to go with the indulgent Monsoon Valley Late Harvest Chenin Blanc for dessert. It's a beautifully-made wine and tastes just like crushed red apples. The options for dessert included mango and lime tart, tropical fruit salas and a sticky rice pudding with coconut; I can already imagine sipping this sweet wine with each of them. It's fruity enough but not cloying, retaining a fresh quince character that makes it very moreish!

It was good fun supplying the wines. We're now getting ready for the big Taste of Corsham event tomorrow!
