World Class Wines from Dorset’s Furleigh Estate

We’re really proud of our range of English wines. One of our shop’s flagship producers can be found just a few miles down towards the English Jurassic coast. Here you’ll find the multi-award winning wines of Furleigh Estate, run by the lovely Rebecca Hansford and Ian Edwards.

Rebecca and Ian mainly produce world-class sparkling wines made from grape varieties sourced from their estate. As the terroir and climate here are similar to Champagne, they have chosen to plant the classic varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier. Alongside these sparklers, they also produce still wines from English favourites like Bacchus and Rondo.

The gorgeous landscape and vineyard at Furleigh Estate are managed by vineyard aficionados Jim Pitcher and Rupert Leeds with a helping hand from Jake Waterston. The saying goes, “you can’t make good wine from bad grapes”, and – luckily for all of us – Pitcher and Leeds ensure the crop is good year after year, meaning Rebecca, Ian and winery assistant Marc McNaughton produce consistently great wines.

Recently, Furleigh Estate have announced they will be releasing a Blanc de Noirs 2014 to join their other sparkling wines. Made in the traditional method, like their other bubblies, the Blanc de Noirs is a blend of 88% Pinot Noir and 12% Meunier. It was matured on its lees for 15 months, ensuring it has that wonderful complexity and body of a good Champagne but the fruit still ensures it has that lovely trademark Englishness – refreshing acidity and delicate elegance.

Annually, Rebecca and Ian produce 40,000 bottles of sparkling and 10,000 bottles of still wine a year. Their portfolio now includes 9 wines, growing since they first planted the vines 11 years ago. They put their success down to two key ingredients: “commitment and passion”.

“When it comes to producing wine, we are not only influenced by the grapes that grow well in our local climate and soil, but also by the styles of wine that our customers enjoy. Our cellar door is open to the public almost every day of the year, so we get direct feedback from our customers as to what they enjoy drinking and preferred styles. We supply wine to some of the best restaurants in London and the South West, and what they order for their customers is also a good indication of favoured styles,” says Rebecca.

Our favourites, the Classic Cuvée, Rosé Brut and Bacchus Fumé have all picked up highly coveted awards in the last year and are must-tries for anyone who enjoys quality English wines.
