3 Superhero Wine Pairings to Marvel About
Have you ever wondered what wine you should be drinking alongside the latest Marvel film? No? Well, we have done it anyway! The Novel Wines team, who all happen to be massive Marvel fans, have decided to pair up three of our favourite Marvel super films with our wines.
You may never have needed wine and film matching until today. Let's dive right in!
Thor Ragnarok (2017) with Weegmuller Scheurebe Trocken
When I heard that director/writer/actor Taiki Waititi was to take the reigns over Thor, I got giddy. The New Zealand talent has been behind two of the most laugh out loud, heart felt and low budget comedies of all time: What We Do In The Shadows (2014) and Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016). In Ragnarok, Waititi's unique brand of comedy is prevalent and the film had us in stitches right the way through.
The best thing about Thor: Ragnarok is that it's damn good fun. Along with the comedy, it's a wonderful mix of bright colours, vivid CGI and an awesome soundtrack. It's like a fruit salad of good times.
We thought that a bottle of our Weegmuller Scheurebe Trocken, from the Pfalz region of Germany, was the best match. Racy acidity hits the pace of Ragnarok spot on, while the wine's vibrant palate of apricots, orange blossom, lemon grass, guava and spice embody Thor's wonderful colour palate and good fun. Weingut Weegmuller is also one of the Palatine's oldest wineries, so we're sure Valkyrie from Asgard might have enjoyed a bottle or two.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 (2017) with Bolney Cuvee Noir
The anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy sequel seemed to divide fans of the first movie. This wacky adventure was definitely hilarious, but the mood of the sequel is very much set by the opening credits. While a blast of action sequences go off like fireworks, the camera is firmly set on a dancing baby Groot and the beginning of the Awesome Mix Tape Vol. 2 soundtrack.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 is one big party. Adventure and action are just the vehicles to laud the audience with another fantastic soundtrack and gut-busting one liners. It's playful, visually gorgeous and - while not one of the best Marvel films - hella good fun.
That's why we think Bolney Estate's Cuvee Noir is the perfect wine. Slightly unusual, being a red sparkling, this plummy, jammy fizzy red is simple great fun. It goes down best lightly chilled with a roaring BBQ and great friends. It's the closest we will get to hanging out with the goofball bunch of Guardians themselves!
Black Panther (2018) with Painted Wolf Guillermo Swartland Pinotage
OK before we even get into this one, if you haven't seen Black Panther yet you really ought to - the film is brilliant! The film is groundbreaking as the first major Hollywood superhero film with a majority black cast. Beautiful visuals, tempered humour (it's very funny, although not quite a comedy like Ragnarok and Guardians), a big social statement and gloriously devised action.
The film also has some of the best bad-ass female characters we've seen from Marvel. From Black Panther's (Chadwick Boseman) 16 year old genius sister Shuri (played by Letitia Wright), who cracks some excellent comedy lines, to warrior Okoye (Danai Gurira) and spy Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), the women are the stars of the show.
Black Panther is good fun but with a serious message and a lot of juicy content to get your teeth into as a viewer. It's also a celebration of Africa, so we've chosen Painted Wolf Guillermo Swartland Pinotage as our wine match. Big, bold, juicy and spicy with laces of coffee and redcurrant. The Painted Wolf wine brand, founded by winemaker Jeremy Borg, also supports the conservation of African wild dogs by donating 5% of all UK revenue to the TUSK foundation. So this good-spirited, gorgeous tasting African red just has to be the perfect partner to Black Panther.
